Steiff Bears and Steiff Animals

On 24th July 1847, Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen an der Brenz as the third of four children. When she was 18 months old, she was ill with a high fever, following which her legs became paralyzed and it hurt her to use her right arm. Three years later, a doctor in Ulm diagnosed her with poliomyelitis. What could little Margarete expect from life now?

But the cheerful Margarete fought for her place. She was taken to school in a hay cart by her siblings and neighbouring children, and taken upstairs to the classroom by a woman who lived near to the school.

In spite of the pain in her right hand, Margarete went to sewing school and at the age of 17 she completed her training as a seamstress.

In 1874, Margarete’s father converted her parent’s house and built herself her own work room, a small tailors shop. With the first money that she earned herself, she bought her own sewing machine.

In 1877 Margarete founded her own felt clothing business and successfully sold clothes and household article. In the magazine ”Modenwelt“ from December 8, 1879, Margarete saw the sewing pattern for a small stuffed elephant. Using this pattern, she made the elephant as a pin cushion, but soon the little stuffed animals became very popular as children’s toys.

So it all started!!

Philip Heath Dolls

British doll artist Philip S. Heath was a master at capturing a child’s heart and soul. All of his dolls are sculpted after real children.

Heath sculpted for Goetz doll manufacturer that produced his dolls in vinyl. Heath died on November 28, 2011 in Worcestershire in the United Kingdom. He was 62 years old.

He was known for his limited edition, hand painted child dolls modeled on real children from around the world. At one time, he designed and sculpted dolls for German doll manufacturer Goetz. After leaving the company, in 2001 he opened his own doll studio in Valencia, Spain. His Lost and Found and Past and Present series of dolls were created in pairs, showing before and after depiction of the same child at different moments in his or her life.

Collector’s story

Marlous, who passed away in 2010, collected Steiff, Philip Heath and other beautiful items all her life. She has been displayed all items in collector cases in a smokefree home. Unfortunately we have no room for this great collection.
